glaucomaYour eyes are made from light-weight but very strong material. An eye needs to maintain its shape and structure, both internally and externally, to properly focus light accurately for clear sight. Clear aqueous fluid is secreted into the eye and circulates around the structures inside the eye, then drains through a meshwork to the blood supply to be renewed. When this drainage system and its meshwork, or possibly the related nerve structures malfunction, the pressure in the eye rises to high levels damaging the optic nerve. This is called glaucoma, and over 300,000 Australians suffer from this disease.

The most common form is chronic or primary open angle glaucoma which gradually destroys vision beginning with side or peripheral vision. It is progressive and relentless. Dr Phipps is expert in diagnosing and treating this terrible disease, with a variety of laser, surgical and pharmaceutical treatment options.
